The Event Details
- When
- Time
- Number of People
- Theme
- Budget
- Potluck – Order In – Make Everything
Before we dive into all the things, you’ll need for your iftar dinner – let’s take through the points you’ll need to establish before getting started. Obviously, you’ll need to think of the date, where you’re having it and at what time.
Next up, you’ll need to think about the number of guests you’re having. That will definitely play a large part in the checklist below. But whether you’re having a small affair or a huge party, the list will be roughly the same. You then need to think about the food! Are you having a potluck, making everything or ordering in?
The last two points you’ll need to think about are your theme & budget. Are going with a Morocco nights theme, black & white, or it’s-a-dinner so let’s just get through it. Make sure to check out some of our ideas here for themes.
And of course, budget. Maybe you’ll have most of the items. Or you’re wanting to purchase a few things to add to your tableware, so you’ll have it for years to come. Or maybe it’s a potluck and people are bring their own platters and serving utensils.
Seating
- Chairs
- Tables – food
- Tables – seating
- Adults
- Kids
- Floor seating
I’d gather to say this is the most important part. Your iftar guests definitely need a place to sit eat, drink and be merry! So now you ask yourself – are we just using the dining room table? Do we need to bring in extra tables for the food or seating? And we can’t forget the kids. They typically will have their own table or floor seating.
Tableware basics
- Tablecloths/table runners
- Plate – appetizer
- Plates – dinner
- Plates – dessert
- Bowls
- Utensils
- Cups – cold
- Cups – hot
- Napkins
Now let’s get to the basics for your iftar table. Tablecloths are always a nice touch, elevates the decor and helps with clean up. Check our list out here. Either trash those tablecloths or throw them in the washer.
When it comes to the plates, utensils, cups and napkins you have lots of options. Are you using reusable items or going with disposable items? Usually this depends on the amount of people you’re having. And your price point. Perhaps this year you’ll invest in forever Ramadan & Eid ceramic plates, or stick with flashy disposable themed ones – like from our list.
Tableware Upgrades
- Chargers
- Utensil holders
- Napkin holders
- Name holders/place card holder
- Sign displaying iftar time
If you’re looking to upgrade your table place settings, consider adding chargers, utensils holders or napkin holders to the table. Chargers are really just for looks. But they do add depth and extra color to your table. This makes the largest impact on the look of your table, but also takes a space. So, keep that in mind.
Next up we recommend only choosing one – a utensil holder or a napkin holder. They’ll typically be placed on top of your plate, so you don’t need them both going on. They can be made out of DIY materials, printables or you can buy reusable nicer ones. We’ve got printable Ramadan utensil holders.
Name holders or place card holders will display your guests name and where on the table they are sitting. These are definitely meant for assigned seating and a more elegant iftar look. Again you an DIY these, use a printable or buy nice year-round ones.
And lastly, please make sure you have a sign displaying iftar time. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, will be asking every ten minutes if it’s not front-and-center.
Salah Area
- Prayer area
- Prayer rugs
- Prayer clothes
When maghrib time comes around you’ll need a space for your guests to pray. And it doesn’t need to be large. If you’re short on space, let your guests know that they’ll be praying in groups to make sure everyone has enough space and is comfortable.
Make sure you have prayer rugs or sheets out for everyone to pray one. If you need to grab a few extras check out our list of prayer rugs for adults or for the kids.
And it’s always a nice idea to keep a few extra prayer clothes around in case someone forgot theirs. Here’s a list of women’s two piece prayer clothes we compiled.
Favors
- Make favors
- To go boxes
Favors are entirely optional at an iftar, but we know some people love to give a little extra during Ramadan. If you’ll be doing that, make sure you have extra favors – just in case.
And we can’t forget to go boxes. You know there will be so much food, so head to the dollar store and grab yourself a few boxes to keep around for guests as they head out.
For the Food
- Large bowls
- Platters
- Pedestal stands
- Serving utensils
- Pitchers
- Beverage dispensers
- Carafes
- Stir sticks
- Creamer holder
- Sugar holder
- Bowl for dates & pits
If you’re preparing your food or purchasing it to serve, you’ll always need a place to put that food. Perhaps it’s coming in aluminum serving trays and you won’t have to worry. But if you’re preparing it yourself, you might need bowls for the soup & salad, large platter for small bites and entrees. Don’t forget your dessert needs a spot as well, that’s when pedestal stands come in handy. And of course, you’ll need large spoons and forks to serve everything with.
Now let’s move to the drinks. You might have everything in a can, or require pitchers for water, lemonades and other drinks. If you are serving large quantities of drinks, you might want a beverage dispenser instead.
The hot drinks will require carafes or larger, insulated dispensers. And for an extra touch bring out the creamer holder & sugar holder for the chai and coffee. Lastly, add the stir sticks so everyone isn’t using the same spoon.
Table Decor
- Vases
- Candle holders
- Lanterns
- Flowers & greenery
- Confetti
- Etcetera
Now this section is entirely optional and really plays into your theme. Maybe you’ll be serving your food on another table, so you have the option of decorating the center. This is when you can do simple with flowers in vases or greenery laid on the table. Or perhaps add candles and small lanterns down the middle. And it’s always easy and festive to add confetti along your table. The possibilities really are endless. Check out these tablescape inspirations or these outdoor tablescape ideas.
Inshallah this iftar checklist printable is helpful for your next iftar – bismillah!
