Cricut Ramadan Doormat DIY

Create your own, customizable, fun & cheeky Ramadan doormat on your Cricut.

This Cricut Ramadan Doormat DIY is playful. Fun, cute, silly, but also difficult. I’m going to be real honest here, it’s not a quick and easy craft. It’s a craft that takes time and a load of patience – particularly if you’ve never dealt with a doormat and it’s unkind texture. Because your vinyl won’t stick very well, but is it worth it in the end? We think so.  A YouTube tutorial for this Ramadan Cricut craft is on its way over on our YouTube channel. Subscribe & follow to get notifications. We hope to bring you more Ramadan Cricut projects & ideas in the future!

Scroll to the bottom to skip to the step-by-step instructions.

Supplies

20220301_114929

Let’s run through the supplies really quick. Because this craft does need a fair amount of more unusual pieces due to it’s size. Products are linked, or visit our Amazon storefront

  • Cricut – we used the Explorer 2
  • Large 12×24 Cricut Cutting Mat
  • Large Removable Vinyl
    • We heard permanent vinyl is better for this project, but we used removable
  • Large transfer tape
  • Weeding tools
  • Scissors
  • Doormat
    • Amazon
    • IKEA
  • Paint possibilities – pick one:
    • Flex Seal paint
    • Rust Oleum paint
    • Outdoor Acrylic Paint – we did this
  • Foam paintbrush
  • Thin paintbrush
  • Painter’s tape

Create the message for the doormat

20220228_095109
  1. Measure your mat
    1. The IKEA one was 35 wide 23 ½ inches tall
  2. Determine what size you’d like your message. Ours was around 12 tall x 17 ½ wide
  3. Design your message, or use ours – get it here
  4. Select all of the words by highlighting them
  5. Group them together
  6. Leave them highlighted and weld the message together

Make it into a stencil

20220228_102731
  1. Go to shapes and add a rectangle.
  2. Make the rectangle the same size as the letters
  3. Move the message group above the rectangle
  4. Highlight the message & the rectangle
  5. Slice everything together

Leave just the stencil

20220228_102920
  1. Now remove the top 2 layers of the design.
  2. Delete the just font layers until you’re left with the box with the font stencil
  3. Now it’s time to print

Place the vinyl on the cutting mat

20220228_103655
  1. Now it’s time to cut the vinyl to size
  2. We cut a 12×18 size for the vinyl
  3. Lay the vinyl on your printing mat, make sure to get all the air bubbles out.
  4. And make sure you have lots of space behind your Cricut for your mat to go through

Cut the message

20220228_104105(0)
  1. On your Cricut machine select vinyl
  2. Select ‘make it’
  3. Hit continue
  4. Load your mat & hit the loading button on your machine
  5. Once loaded, hit cut on your machine
  6. Once it’s done cutting, unload the mat

Weed out the message

20220228_121306
  1. Take the vinyl off the mat
  2. Wed your stencil by removing the letters and the far outside area to leave the rectangle in place

Place the transfer tape on top

20220228_122424
  1. Trim your transfer tape to size
  2. Take your transfer tape and place it over the top of your stencil, smoothing out any bubbles

Remove the vinyl

20220228_123220
  1. Before you peel, measure the stencil and mark where you’d like to place it on your doormat. So you’re ready to go.
  2. Peel the transfer tape and stencil away from the stencil backing
  3. This takes a lot of patience, go slow

Place the message on the doormat

20220228_123629

Lay down your heat pad or towel, doubled over, on your table. Place your blanket on top. Next, figure out spacing of the lanterns. We did 2 1/2 inches in between, but I would bump that up to 3 or 3 1/2 inches space. Heat the iron to 315 degrees while doing this.

Tape the message down

20220228_125243
  1. Place the stencil on the doormat lightly. Before you push it down, measure once more to make sure it’s centered
  2. Scrape the stencil down onto the doormat
  3. As you start to peel the contact paper off, start to tape down your design. Use loads of tape and be careful – your stencil will still move.
  4. Continue to peel the transfer tape off and add the rest of your tape

Paint

20220228_144928
  1. Take your acrylic or outdoor paint and using a foam brush, paint over the stencil. Make sure you do it around medium pressure. Don’t worry about every crevice, you can fill that in after the stencil is off. You really want to make sure at least the outline is there
  2. Remove the stencil once you’re done or wait around 10 minutes. As always, be careful as the paint is wet
  3. Weed out the smaller sections

After the stencil

20220228_150720

Not great. Let’s fill it in.

Fill in

20220228_152455

Take your thin paintbrush and go in to finish filling out the message and smoothing out the design. Much better!

On display

Let it sit for 24 hours before doing anything

How to Create Ramadan Tea Towels with Cookie Cutters

20220221_150411

Let’s talk supplies first. You can always skip to the bottom for all the supplies & instructions. Products are linked, or visit our Amazon storefront.

  • White tea towels 2 pk/tea towels 12 pk
  • Iron
  • Potatoes – russet
  • Cardboard
  • Ramadan themed cookie cutters
  • Knife
  • Acrylic paint
  • Fabric painting medium/textile medium
  • Paper plate/paint palette
  • Foam paint brush
  • Paint brush
  • Paper

Place your towel over cardboard or another surface. Iron out the area you’ll be stamping on.

20220221_151453

Once you’ve determined the pattern and colors. You’ll need to mix all of your colors with a few drops of fabric medium. This helps to soften the paint so it’s not so hard on your towel.

20220221_152004

Dip your cookie cutters in the paint and do a test onto your white paper. If it looks good, go ahead and dip it back into the paint and place your first stamp onto the towel.

20220221_152651

Repeat the process with your pattern until the towel is complete. We opted for a camel and star pattern along the bottom of the towel.

20220221_153253

How to Create a Ramadan Tea Towels using Potato Stamps

Iron your towel in the place you’ll be stamping. And determine your pattern and colors used.

Once that is done you’re going to:

  1. Cut your potato in half
  2. Insert the cookie cutter into the potato half way, take out
  3. Trim off any access pieces so you have a crisp figure from your cookie cutter
20220221_154738

And mix the paint with a few drops of the painting medium. Now dip your potato stamps into the paint and stamp it onto the white paper as a test. If that’s good, stamp it back into the paint and stamp onto the towel in the desired location.

Continue with your pattern until you’re finished.

20220221_155753

If you notice you have gaps in the paint. You can go in with your paint brush and fill in the gaps.

Print it in Black & White

20210316_180949

No coloring in necessary and it still looks fantastic.

Color it in

20210319_161800 (1)

We grabbed a kid for our example, she loved coloring in our our Ramadan decor and even cut it out herself!

Now it’s the adults turn to color it in with crayon…

Let’s get into how to make the tassels and hang it up.

How to Make the Tassel & Hang

20210316_181126 (1)

Take a single hole puncher and make three holes. You’ll punch out the top corner dots – that’s where you’ll hang it. And then, if you’re making a tassel, cut the last hole in the bottom center point.

20210319_161800 (1)

Grab your favorite color yarn and keep one end pointing down like so…

Then start wrapping it around your palm. 20 wraps make a nice and thick tassel.

Screenshot_20210319-155625_Photos

Once you’ve gone around 20 times, keep the yarn around your palm. You’re going to thread the string at the top of the loop and tie. Make sure to leave more string than we did as that string will be tied to the banner!

Screenshot_20210319-155721_Photos

Then cut the bottom portion of make the tassel. Finally, give it a trim and you’re all good.

20210319_162341 (1)

Tie the tassel onto the bottom hole of the banner.

20210319_162449 (1)

Now grab another piece of yarn and thread it through one hole, double tying in a knot on the back. Thread it through the other end and tie into a knot.

Now display and have a Happy Ramadan!

Supplies

Products are linked, or visit our full Amazon Cricut supply list

  • Cricut Explorer or higher
  • Blanket – we got a fleece in dark grey
  • Heat transfer vinyl glitter (HTV) or regular
  • Strong grip mat
  • Scissors
  • Weeding tools
  • Iron or Cricut Heat Press
  • Heat pad or towel

How to make the Ramadan Cricut Blanket DIY

The first thing you need to do is open Cricut on your computer. Then download our lantern file, at the bottom of the article. Once you do, upload the png file to Cricut. We choose moderately complex. No background remover needed so just select apply & continue. Next select cut image and hit upload.

20220312_143939

Configure the Image

Once it’s uploaded, select the image and hit add to canvas. Now that you’ve got one lantern, you’re going to want to make it approximately 3 inches wide by 6 inches tall. Now duplicate that image five times, for a total of six lanterns.

For the advanced Cricuters out there, you could even place a box on top of the large part of the lantern and make a cut out there or add another color and layer the vinyl.

The lanterns will be printed on a strong grip mat, and we’re using glitter heat transfer vinyl (HTV) so we need to keep it within the roll we have, which means it can’t go over 12 inches wide, and 12 inches tall.

20220312_144545

Print

Time to send to the printer. Click ‘make it’ and make sure that all of your lanterns appear on your mat. If not, you’ll need to adjust their sizes ever so smaller for it to fit.

When you’re dealing with HTV you always want to hit the mirror button, so turn that on. Now because these lanterns aren’t words, they’ll cut the same regardless of mirroring, I still do it to get into the habit.

Before you print make sure your dial is on the correct setting! Switch your knob to custom, then select glitter iron-on. Glitter is a little thicker and we want a nice clean cut. Pressure setting, default. If you’re not doing glitter you can select the regular iron-on knob on your Cricut.

20220312_145651
20220312_150001

Grab your strong grip mat and cut the iron-on to the size you’ve made it. Glitter vinyl is so thick that typically a regular stick grip mat won’t hold your HTV well enough in place. If you’ve got an area where there are no lanterns, go ahead and trim that glitter out. No need to waste glitter HTV.

Make sure to place the HTV shiny side up! We did a total of 7 lanterns, because honestly, we messed up the first cut and we’ll explain how in the next step. But print as many as you want!

20220312_154943

Let the Cricut cut it our your lanterns. Never mind the change of mats in the photo, let us tell you what happened. We didn’t understand the depth of the cut on our lanterns. We did a first run but the lanterns weren’t completely cut out, like traditional vinyl, and so we kept going until we realized this.

HTV is vinyl & transfer tape in one. Which means it only needs to cut the vinyl but doesn’t need to cut the transfer tape on the mat side. That means your lanterns will look cut out on one side, but not on the other. This is what you want!

Check out the mat side of the HTV, not a cut to be seen. And that’s what you want with HTV.

Now it’s time to individually, with scissors, cut each lantern out. Be careful when doing it – you definitely don’t want to cut through a lantern! And don’t cut the lanterns out exactly, leave space all around the lantern so you can get a grip on the transfer tape and pull off after ironing them on.
20220312_155241

Lay down your heat pad or towel, doubled over, on your table. Place your blanket on top. Next, figure out spacing of the lanterns. We did 2 1/2 inches in between, but I would bump that up to 3 or 3 1/2 inches space. Heat the iron to 315 degrees while doing this.

20220312_161349

Before ironing on your first lantern, you’ll need to heat the area where your first lantern will go. Don’t skip this step, it’s important, and helps the vinyl create a smoother finish. Press down for around 7-10 seconds.

Once the blanket is warm, place your first lantern down and place the iron on it, with pressure, for 30 seconds at 315 degrees.

Keep repeating with each lantern. Heat the blanket, then iron on the lantern. Once you’re done with the entire front part. Flip the blanket and iron every lantern once more for 30 seconds at 315 degrees with pressure.

Instructions

  1. Open Cricut on your computer.
  2. Download our lantern file.
  3. Upload the png file to Cricut. We choose moderately complex. No background remover needed so just select apply & continue.
  4. Select cut image and hit upload.
  5. Once it’s uploaded, select the image and hit add to canvas.
  6. Make the lantern approximately 3 inches wide by 6 inches tall.
  7. Duplicate that image five times, for a total of six lanterns.
  8. For the advanced Cricuters out there, you could even place a box on top of the large part of the lantern and make a cut out there or add another color and layer the vinyl.
  9. The lanterns will be printed on a strong grip mat, and we’re using glitter heat transfer vinyl (HTV) so we need to keep it within the roll we have, which means it can’t go over 12 inches wide, and 12 inches tall.
  10. Send to the printer. Click ‘make it’ and make sure that all of your lanterns appear on your mat. If not, you’ll need to adjust their sizes every so smaller for it to fit.
  11. When you’re dealing with HTV you always want to hit the mirror button, so turn that on. Now because these lanterns aren’t words and they’ll cut the same, regardless of mirroring, I still do it to get into the habit.
  12. Before you print make sure your dial is on the correct setting! Switch your knob to custom, then select glitter iron-on. Glitter is a little thicker and we want a nice clean cut. Pressure setting, default. If you’re not doing glitter you can select the regular iron-on knob on your Cricut.
  13. Grab your strong grip mat and cut the iron-on to the size you’ve made it. Glitter vinyl is so thick that typically a regular stick grip mat won’t hold your HTV well enough in place. If you’ve got an area where there are no lanterns, go ahead and trim that glitter out.
  14. Place the HTV shiny side up! We printed a total of 7 lanterns, but six would look great.
  15. Let the Cricut cut it. Side note:  HTV is vinyl & transfer tape in one. Which means it only needs to cut the vinyl but doesn’t need to cut the transfer tape on the mat side. That means your lanterns will look cut out on one side, but not on the other. This is what you want!
  16. Cut each lantern out with your scissors. Be careful – don’t cut through a lantern! And don’t cut the lanterns out exactly, leave space all around the lantern so you can get a grip on the transfer tape and pull off.
  17. Lay down your heat pad or towel, doubled over, on your table. Place your blanket on top.
  18. Heat the iron to 315 degrees.
  19. Figure out the spacing of the lanterns. We did 2 1/2 inches in between, but I would bump that up to 3 or 3 1/2 inches space.
  20. Before ironing on your first lantern, you’ll need to heat the area where your first lantern will go. Don’t skip this step, it’s important for and helps the vinyl create a smoother finish. Press down for around 7-10 seconds.
  21. Once the blanket is warm, place your first lantern down and place the iron on it, which pressure, for 30 seconds at 315 degrees.
  22. Keep repeating with each lantern. Once you’re done with the entire front part. Flip the blanket and iron every lantern once more for 30 seconds at 315 degrees with pressure.
  23. Flip the blanket over and start peeling the transfer tape off each lantern
  24. All done!
